“Young voices of the Baltic Sea Region”

In 2003 the city of Kalmar together with the Union of the Baltic Cities and the Baltic Sea Secretariat for Youth Affairs organised the conference “Young voices of the Baltic Sea Region”.

The conference hosted around 100 youngsters from 8 countries and 34 cities in the Baltic Sea Region, who discussed on the most important issues for young people of today and on the involvement and participation of youth on the local level. In the framework of the UBC’s cooperation project with the Lake Victoria Local Authority Cooperation (LVRLAC) in Africa also 7 young people from the countries bordering the lake Victoria were invited to and partcipated in the conference.

The conference adressed the following questions:

• How can youth involvement be organised within the structure of the Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC)?
• How can UBC member cities be inspired to involve young people on their local level?
• What are important questions for young people living in the Baltic Sea Region?
